Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)
At ELIS Advantage, inclusion is more than just a word; it is the foundation of our principles and how we work.
We are committed to diversity and inclusion in our work, partnerships and wider practice. We recognise that while equality is fundamental, equity requires an understanding of differences, biases, privilege, power and differing needs.
We intentionally engage with professionals, organisations and communities who are committed to diversity and inclusion not only in what they say, but in what they do. We also recognise that no one person or organisation holds all the right knowledge, experience or terminology. Inclusive practice requires ongoing learning, reflection and action beyond our own direct experience.
We commit time and effort to continuing to educate ourselves on issues connected with diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppressive practice, and to turning that knowledge into action. We believe in the power of conversation, encourage each voice and create space for people’s experiences, feelings, perspectives and beliefs to be heard.
We aim to support the presence of the whole person in our work. This includes recognising lived experience and valuing differences that extend beyond the legal requirements relating to discrimination.
Our team continues to develop its awareness and practice in relation to LGBTQ+ inclusion, disability and different abilities, race and ethnicity, the Traveller community, social disadvantage, mental health, care experience, religion, gender diversity and other experiences of society. We do not claim to be experts in every lived experience. We do commit to continuing to learn, listen and improve.
Members of our team engage in anti-oppressive and inclusion learning, seek out materials created by people with different lived experiences, pursue diversity within our partnerships and service providers, and support movements and organisations focused on human rights and equality.
We recognise that we will not always get everything right. Our commitment is to remain open to challenge, address mistakes, keep learning and continue taking action — including when doing so is uncomfortable.
Every person matters. Every voice matters. Inclusion is ongoing work.
